Kenya to counter land fraud using Blockchain

Kenya is testing Blockchain technology to provide a more transparent and auditable process against suspicious land movements such as double ownership.

Land fraud is a hot topic in Africa. A common type of corruption is in the ownership of land. Here, the cartel can team up with the authorities to collaborate on the lands that criminal organizations want to acquire illegally. These practices have been challenged by emerging African entrepreneurs.

Here Blockchain technology is used to create tamper-proof digital land records.

Kenya will register plots in transparent registry systems with Blockchain

An example of the implementation of blockchain technology is in Kenya. Blockchain provides a mechanism to store vital data related to contracts and assets. This allows the creation of digital transaction ledgers. The first role of the platform will be to enable the development of State Land Registry systems.

An example from Kenya comes from Peter Tole, founder of Land Layby Group, a real estate company based in Nairobi. The company is experimenting with Blockchain. This works as a private land registry that will allow investors to securely purchase land and properties.

It will use a cryptocurrency called the ‘harambee token’ from the new registry. The digital currency will work without compromise by adding the right inputs to its participants to the Blockchain. The system will also punish those who record incorrectly.
